Seethakaathi | 2018 Tamil Art Film | Vijay Sethupathi | T. S. B. K. Moulee | J. Mahendran | Balaji Tharaneetharan | Film Buff Review

An Artist never dies!

Hello everyone my name is Vinay V. Suvarna and today I would be talking about the movie 'Seethakaathi', a 2018 Tamil-language Art film. The character in the poster looks so elegant that I decided that this would be my FB Page Display Picture. I watched this film in theater on the first week of its release in Chennai. Usually the type of movies starring Vijay Sethupathi are among the ones I highly prefer to watch, the same with films starring Nawazuddin Siddiqui and Rajkummar Rao. If it is Malayalam then it got to be Fahadh Faasil.

The movie is about a Theater Artist Ayya Aadhimoolam, who breathes art, and gains immense fame in the world of theater, but refuses to act in Films throughout his entire life.

This was the 25th Lead Role film of actor Vijay Sethupathi who can be seen playing the character of Ayya Aadhimoolam in this film.
The film also stars T. S. B. K. Moulee, a well known director, writer, playwright, thespian and actor, along with many other notable star cast. Late J. Mahendran, regarded as one of the greatest film makers of Tamil cinema, has played the role of a Judge in this film.
This was the second film written and directed by Balaji Tharaneetharan, the first being 'Naduvula Konjam Pakkatha Kaanom' which was a huge cult hit and was remade in several Indian languages.
The Music was composed by Govind Vasantha (formerly Govind Menon), an Indian composer, singer, and violinist who works in Malayalam and Tamil films.
Saraskanth T. K. was the Cinematographer of this film.
The film was released on 20 December 2018 with a lot of promotion in Chennai. It received very positive reviews from the critics.

Lets go ahead and watch the trailer:

The trailer tells us that everyone is waiting for Ayya to come back and play various characters in their films. However Ayya seems to be disturbed about something and is seen confined to himself.
After watching this movie in theater, I watched it twice online. The film too is as gripping as its trailer. The first 20 minutes might be a little slow but those are the most crucial moments in the film which connects the character of Ayya to the audience. After the initial 20 minutes the film is a complete entertainer with all emotions in the right place. The story is completely different from the regular drama films, beautifully written by Balaji Tharaneetharan. Vijay Sethupathi's make over as a Great Theater actor truly justifies him as an actor in reality dedicated to Art. The two actors I particularly liked in this film were Bagavathi Perumal, the kinky cop from 'Super Deluxe', and Rajkumar (Tamil actor) for their intensity and involvement into the character. Their seriousness in the film will definitely make you laugh. The background score perfectly enhances the emotion in every scene. The cinematography is simple yet elegant, capturing every emotion beautifully.
This one is a must watch for all Art film lovers. I again stress, do not read the plot online. The film makers spend so much of their creative energies in making a film like this. A commercial comedy movie might fail to make you laugh but a serious movie like 'Seethakaathi' will definitely make you laugh. That's the beauty of Art. And as Oscar Wilde once said - “Art is the only serious thing in the world. And the artist is the only person who is never serious.”

The movie is now available on Prime Video.
